The full moon of Sunday, May 31 is the auspicious day of Saga Dawa Duchen, honoring the Buddha’s enlightenment and mahaparinirvana.

Saga Dawa began May 17th this year and is the fourth month of the Tibetan lunar calendar. Throughout his life, Buddha Shakyamuni fulfilled many of his major activities during this month. Standing high among them are his birth in this world, his enlightenment, and his mahaparinirvana. It is during this month that, after three countless eons accumulating merit and wisdom, he achieved the ultimate benefit to himself and others: buddhahood - complete and full enlightenment.

Ven. Khenpo Tsewang Dongyal Rinpoche reminds us that this is a powerful and auspicious time for practice and meritorious activities. It is said that the karmic power of our activities multiply millions of times during this month. For Buddhists, this day is one of the most sacred days of the year when karmic effects are naturally multiplied millions of times. So meditation practice and virtuous deeds are strongly encouraged and celebrated!
