Question: "My question is on the dharmapala practice. I understand why my mind is vulnerable and needs protection and other sentient beings need protection, but I don’t understand why the Dharma needs protection."
Ven. Khenpo Tsewang Rinpoche: "Why do we need Dharma protectors? What is the Dharma actually? Of course, Dharma is all the texts and teachings, but really Dharma is about our virtuous thoughts of love, kindness, compassion, joy, and appreciation. When we are devoted and maintain this motivation, we are protecting the Dharma.
When we do Dharma protector practices we might think we are going to protect the texts and the books, but really we are asking for help to continually maintain our courage, commitment, confidence, joy, and love so they don’t fall apart due to duality conceptions. That is what the Dharma protectors are about.
We often ask for help to protect us on our path--our meditation, our support and our circumstances--all the way to enlightenment. Dharma protectors help us protect, grow, and deepen those qualities."
