PSL Shedra Philosophy Retreat: The Essential Ten Meanings of the Guhyagarbha Tantra

September 2, 2015 - September 3, 2015

The Essential Ten Meanings of the Guhyagarbha TantraAccording to the commentary “Luminous Essence”
of the great Nyingma Master Jamgon Mipham Rinpoche
by Khenpo Tsewang Rinpoche
August 29 – September 3, 2015
“Luminous Essence” (Osel Nyingpo) is a complete introduction to the world of Vajrayana thought and practice. Composed by the renowned Tibetan master Jamgon Mipham (1846‰ÛÒ1912), the text provides an overview of the theory and realization of the Guhyagarbha Tantra (Tantra of the Secret Essence), one of the most important Inner Tantra teachings in the Nyingma lineage. “Luminous Essence” is a summation of Longchenpa’s extensive and classic commentary on the Guhyagarbha Tantra.
Embodying the essence of tantric practice, the Guhyagarbha Tantra has been a central scripture in Tibetan Buddhism for well over a thousand years, and Mipham Rinpoche’s explanation of this text is one of the most celebrated commentaries on the Guhyagarbha Tantra.
There will be two daily teachings by Ven. Khenpo Rinpoche, with lots of time for questions and answers, morning and evening meditation practices, and additional evening group discussions.

“The Mula Guhyagarbha Tantra, or Root Tantra of the Secret Essence, explains that buddhahood does not come from outside ourselves. We are not practicing to create something that is currently absent but will emerge at a later time‰ÛÓinstead, we are simply discovering the true nature as it is. Therefore, the teachings describe ourselves, others, and the entire universe as originally inseparable from the spontaneously inherent divine mandala. Appearance, sound, and awareness are already pure from the beginning. They are in the enlightened status right now. Since the Glorious Guhyagarbha lays out this profound view in great detail, it is known as the ‰ÛÏKing of All Tantras,‰۝ the ‰ÛÏpeak of all yanas,‰۝ the ‰ÛÏsource of all doctrinal schools,‰۝ and the ‰ÛÏuniversal explanation of all scriptures.‰۝ It is the ‰ÛÏfinal intention, thought, and realization of all buddhas,‰۝ the ‰ÛÏultimate result of all yanas,‰۝ the ‰ÛÏgreat passage of all the Victorious Ones of the three times,‰۝ and the ‰ÛÏsupreme highway of all yogis and yoginis.‰۝ Together, these are known as the ‰ÛÏEight Greatnesses‰۝ of this tantra. Along the course of history, many great masters and practitioners have achieved full realization by engaging in the Secret Essence teachings. Today we are connecting with this very same path by studying, contemplating, and meditating on the nugget essence of the Dharma through these instructions. We are finally discovering the profound and mysterious secret that has been hidden from us for such a long time: the guhya garbha, or ‰ÛÏsecret essence,‰۝ of the inherent nature of reality.”
