Annual Winter Dzogchen Retreat
January 19, 2008 - January 27, 2008
EMPOWERMENT OF THE LAKE BORN VAJRA GURU PADMASAMBHAVA: THE SECOND BUDDHA (Pema Tsokye Dorje)According to the Dudjom Tersar Lineage
Tsoche Thug Thig (Heart Drop of the Lake Born) is one of the many great termas, or discovered teachings, revealed by His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche. It is especially powerful and relevant now. Guru Padmasambhava both predicted its discovery and designated this practice for these degenerate times. This exceptional text was revealed in the late 20th century by H.H. Dudjom Rinpoche.
In Tibetan, Guru Padmasambhava is generally referred to as Guru Rinpoche, which means “precious master.” Guru Rinpoche is renowned as the buddha of degenerate times. He dispels all negativities and violence, freeing all beings from their troubles and disturbances. In the seventh century, Guru Rinpoche brought the entire teachings of Buddha Shakyamuni to Tibet. Buddha Shakyamuni actually predicted Guru Rinpoche‰۪s appearance as a fully enlightened buddha, saying that Guru Rinpoche would be a direct reincarnation of Buddha Shakyamuni himself.
Guru Rinpoche did not become enlightened gradually or start practicing the teachings of Buddha Shakyamuni and eventually gain enlightenment. Guru Rinpoche incarnated as a fully enlightened being. Through his form, primordial wisdom manifested in the world to benefit all sentient beings.
When Guru Rinpoche appeared on earth, he came as a human being. In order to dissolve our attachment to dualistic conceptions and destroy complex neurotic fixations, he also exhibited some extraordinary manifestations. Pema Tsokye Dorje is one of the ways that he manfiested and performed beneficial activities on behalf of all beings.
TEACHINGS ON ZURCHUNGPA’S TESTAMENT
This year’s winter retreat will focus on the final teaching of Zurchungpa Sherab Drag, one of the great masters of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism. Living around the eleventh century, Zurchungpa achieved the highest realization by practicing Dzogchen meditation combined with practice of the Guhyagarbha tantra. He inspired numerous disciples and lineage holders through his wonderful, amazing teachings. Among all of his precious instructions, one of his most famous is known as Eighty Verses of Direct Nugget Instructions, which explains the view, meditation, and conduct according to the Great Perfection.
