The lama knows the Dharma, as well as which practices are suited for each student’s particular needs and abilities. The lama is a role model and an example of spiritual excellence. For centuries, the teachings have helped countless beings cross over unenlightened existence. We too can cross over—eventually we can become like the lama. As we continue to practice, all of this becomes increasingly apparent, and our motivation to practice grows stronger. Devotion is an enthusiastic commitment to our teacher, the teaching, and to our own path and potential.”
