“The moment you realize that your mind has gone back to regular ego-clinging, it’s very important to catch the mind and return to the larger, more expansive view of reality. The more your mind can be in the view of great emptiness, the more it will soften all the negative emotions of ignorance, attachment, and anger. Very naturally, they will no longer be experienced in the same way that we experience them when we’re grasping to ego.
Until we can maintain this wisdom all the time, it’s necessary to meditate using the analytic wheel of investigation. This technique increasingly deepens our realization that everything is compounded and exists only in the momentary state of its appearance. Using this wheel of analytic meditation develops the wisdom awareness to overcome all ego-clinging, and over time, our realization of the transparent state of all phenomena will become more stable.
Our goal is to transcend thoughts rather than habitually pursue them. When you’re new to the path, it’s very important to spend time analyzing and investigating physical and mental objects very thoroughly. As your understanding becomes clearer, you naturally decrease the frequency and intensity of this type of analysis and investigation. As your certainty wisdom increases, your doubts and hesitation lessen. At that point, it becomes possible to meditate without clinging and running after every concept and topic that arises in your mind.”
